Sir Walter Scott 1771 - 1832, poet and novelist. Scott was the father of the historical novel, influential throughout Europe and America. Evans of Handsworth
In 1805 Boulton & Watt, of the Soho
Foundry, Handsworth, Birmingham, decided to discontinue the manufacture of
clocks and handed this side of their business over to John Houghton who
had been their foreman. Houghton established himself in Soho Street and
called his business ‘The Soho Clock Factory,’ where trade flourished
and in due course his son-in-law, William Frederick Evans, joined him.
Houghton retired in 1843 leaving Evans to run the business and died some
20 years later.
Further details of Evans and descriptions of these clocks and pictures are to be found on pages 61-63 and 123-156 of "Skeleton Clocks. Britain 1800 - 1914" by Derek Roberts.
