AN IMPORTANT AND EARLY ENGLISH PRECISION
MAHOGANY LONGCASE REGULATOR. CIRCA 1790.

An extremely elegant early precision English longcase regulator. The mahogany case has nicely figured veneers to the door and panelled plinth, and stands on a shaped apron. The corners of the hood have fractional canting and there is a strong mould to the flat top.

The eight day weight driven movement has thick plates and nicely shaped pillars, typical of the earlier style of regulator. It has finely finished wheelwork, dead beat escapement, long crutch and Harrison’s maintaining power. The large heavy lenticular brass pendulum bob has a wooden rod and is suspended from a separate platform which is secured to, and spans, both plates. It has a small brass cased weight.

The elegant 10" silvered brass dial has previously been resigned inappropriately for a famous maker. We have removed that signature and left it plain. The dial has an aperture below the central arbor for the hours and a large seconds ring above. The engraved minute ring is narrow as is normal in these early regulators and has Arabic numerals for the minutes. The minute hand and the counter balanced seconds hand are finely executed in blued steel.

English regulators prior to 1800 are extremely rare as they were really only made for observatories and similar institutions. It was not until the mid 19th century that they started to be produced in much greater numbers for domestic use.

Height: 6' 1" (184 cms.)

Price band: N
