COUSENS & WHITESIDE, BERKLEY SQUARE.
AN EXTREMELY ELEGANT ROSEWOOD LIBRARY TIMEPIECE. CIRCA 1850

A fine quality small library timepiece. The rosewood case of four glass construction with a flat pagoda shaped top has an arched top front glass with two square viewing panels in the sides and a square glazed rear door. The corners are canted and the clock goes down into a multi stepped base finally standing on four carved rosewood bun feet. The brass silvered dial is signed for the makers ‘Cousens & Whiteside, Davies Street, Berkley Square.’ It has blued steel heart and pointer hands and a winding square above 6 o’clock.

The fine quality eight day chain fusee movement has a plain backplate with a pendulum holdfast in the middle and the pendulum itself has the nice feature of a top mounted rating nut.

The makers Cousens & Whiteside are noted as working in both London and Paris from 1844 to 1851 and Robert Cousens is noted as working from 1839 to 1844 at which date he went into partnership with Whiteside.
