WILLIAM EDWARDS, LONDON. AN EXTREMELY SMALL MAHOGANY BELL TOP BRACKET CLOCK. CIRCA 1790.

A nicely figured and small bell top bracket clock. The case with a gilded brass carrying handle at the top has a well figured mahogany bell top and a typical opening front door with wooden mouldings to the glass. There are two brass sound frets to the top above the arch and the sides have shaped glass panels. The rear door conforming to the shape of the front door but without any sound frets. The case stands on small wooden feet in each of the four corners.

The attractive arched dial has a strike/silent dial in the arch and below that the main dial has a large cut out below 12 o’clock for the signature plaque signed ‘Will’m Edwards, London.’ There is a date aperture above 6 o’clock and the rest of the centre is well matted. The silvered chapter ring has Roman numerals and Arabic outer numerals and there are well cast spandrels to the corners and to the sides of the arch. It has well fretted blued steel hands.

The eight day gut fusee striking movement has a reinstated verge escapement and strikes the hours on a bell mounted above the movement. The backplate is nicely engraved with a bird within a central cartouche, and three stamps for ‘T. Crook’ who we believe was the person who converted the clock to anchor escapement. The movement has five nicely knopped pillars and well crossed out wheel work.

Height to base of handle: 13½" (34 cms.)

Price band: F

A William Edwards is noted as working in London (Holborn and Cheapside) from 1744 to 1793. The only other clockmakers of that name have dates which would not tie in with the date of this clock and so we can safely assume that this was the maker.
