31579C.MYS These fascinating clocks, which were patented by Guilmet in 1867, (Brevet No. 783110), with subsequent patents in 1872 and 1874, feature a figure on top from the outstretched arm of which a gilded pendulum swings to and fro without having any apparent connection to the movement: indeed the figure and pendulum can easily be lifted off the clock. The basic principle is the almost imperceptible oscillation of the platform on which the statue rests. Impulse is passed to the pendulum via the suspension, a technique which Riefler was to employ on his regulators some thirty years later.
The bronzed female figure rests on a circular platform and from her outstretched right arm hangs the pendulum. The rectangular main body of the case has lion mask handles with drops to either side. The black marble of the case has incised gilt decoration and the chapter ring to the front employs engraved and gilded Roman numerals. The base of the clock also has gilt decoration and rests on elaborate lions paw feet. |

The substantial movement employs count wheel strike on a bell and is numbered on the backplate 1586 together with the stamp of Guilmet Brevete GLT SGDG. It employs the crank-wheel escapement devised by Guilmet.
