A PARTICULARLY FINE FULLY ENGRAVED OVAL CARRIAGE CLOCK
BY JAPY FRERES AND RECLUS. CIRCA 1860.

An extremely attractive fully engraved oval carriage clock. The gilded case with floral and foliate engraving to the handle, the panels and door. It has geometric engraving to the rounded top and bottom moulds.

The white enamel dial has a subsidiary alarm dial below 6 o’clock. It has Roman numerals and nicely blued moon hands.

The eight day striking and repeating movement strikes the hours on a bell mounted on the backplate. It has an unusual bell stand which is fixed around the hand setting key and has the arrow for hand setting engraved on the boss of the bell stand. It has a fine quality silvered lever platform escapement with compensation weights.

The backplate is signed for two makers. It has the stamp for Japy Freres and the 1855 Exhibition and in addition to this it has the ‘VR’ trademark below a sunburst which was the trademark of Reclus. They were noted for showing a beautiful collection of carriage clocks at the Exhibition of 1867, although we believe this clock is earlier than that because of the 1855 Japy Freres stamp.

Height to base of handle: 6" (15 cms.)

Price band: N
