31596C.C A very attractive carriage clock, the bronzed case in a style much used by McCabe has canted corners with scrolled finishings to the top and bottom. It has a typical McCabe carrying handle with a reeded centre section and conforming scrolls to the sides of the handle which match the front corners of the case. The case has a removable rear door with shutters for the handset and winding and a slide for the fast slow adjustment. The dial is a particularly nice feature. It has a gilded sight ring enclosing an engine turned and gilded dial with Roman numerals on the chapter ring and a small outer minute ring. It is signed for the maker below 12 o’clock ‘Desbois.’ It has blued steel hands, the hour hand being a nicely fretted club shape with the minute hand in the shape of a pointer. The eight day gong striking movement is signed on the backplate for the makers ‘Desbois, Grays Inn Passage, London.’ It has a fine English chain fusee movement and a high quality lever escapement which is mounted low down in the movement, an unusual feature. The movement can be viewed through the thick bevelled glass panels to the case. Height to base of handle: 8˝" (22 cms.) |

The original oak travelling case has a lockable lift out front door, visible dovetail joints to the top and bottom edges of the case, and is surmounted by a gilded brass carrying handle. Height of case: 10" (26 cms.) The maker, Daniel Desbois, was one in a line of clockmakers from the same family who continued until the mid 1900s. Up until 1835 he was in partnership with Wheeler and the company was known as Desbois & Wheeler but still worked from the Grays Inn Passage address. From 1835 he went off by himself and took his son into partnership from 1844. They later moved from Grays Inn Passage to High Holborn. The two sons of Daniel Desbois were Daniel and Edwin. Edwin himself had a son, Ernest. All of the carriage clocks that we have had by this maker have been of the finest quality. |
