JOHN BOORMAN, GRAVESEND.
A MAHOGANY CASED ROUND TOPPED VICTORIAN LONGCASE REGULATOR. CIRCA 1850.

An attractive mahogany longcase regulator. The typical round topped Victorian case has opening glazed doors to either side of the movement, an unusual feature, but apart from this is in the standard layout for these clocks with nicely carved decoration under the dial behind the glass and with well chosen veneers to the panelled base which stands on a single plinth.

The high quality six pillar regulator movement has well shaped pillars with thick plates and fine wheel work with screwed collets. The clock has a mercury compensated pendulum of steel construction with a round glass jar for the mercury and is obviously weight drive, the weight descending through an edged hole in the base plate of the clock. The pendulum runs against a well engraved beat plaque, again mounted on the base of the clock.

The quality and style of this clock are superior to most provincial regulators seen and are typical of the quality of a London regulator.

Height: 6' 2" (187 cm)

The maker John Boorman is noted as working in Gravesend from 1839 to 1866. It appears that his business was then taken over by his son who continued into the early 1900s.
