A MAHOGANY CASED ENGLISH REGULATOR
An extremely attractive well figured mahogany longcase regulator. The case, with rounded top, has canted corners to the hood and beading to the four corners of the hood door. It progresses down through a concave moulding to the trunk, again with canted corners conforming to those on the hood, and with a fully glazed front door. It then goes out via a further concave moulding to a double footed plinth with a well chosen flame veneer centre surrounded by cross beading and with incised corners. The backboard of the clock, which is visible through the door, has further well chosen veneers and a large florally engraved beat plaque across the complete width of the trunk, which is most unusual. All of the veneers on the case are of fine quality and well figured.
The 13" silvered regulator style dial is now signed for the retailer, of perhaps the jeweller who used this as their shop clock, ‘Morrison, London.’ It has a typical regulator layout with the seconds dial in the top, hour dial below the centre and the minute dial being the main large dial of the clock. It is marked regulator in bold engraving below the 60 minute marking at the top of the dial.
The movement is of the finest quality. It is punch marked and numbered for John Leyland ‘JL969’ on the front plate. It has six substantial and beautifully shaped pillars and the plates themselves are massive. It has end stops throughout the train which are fully adjustable. The plates are shaped with a step in on both sides near the top of the movement. There is a massive platform across the top of the two plates for hanging the pendulum suspension. There is beat adjustment at the top of the crutch. The wheel work is well fretted out with six crossings and it has maintaining power, Graham deadbeat escapement and high count pinions. The pendulum is a black wood rod with a very heavy brass bob and the weight runs from a well made and nicely crossed out pulley.
