31676C.R A superbly proportioned mahogany longcase regulator. The case with a rounded pediment has a dental moulding and canted corners to the side of the hood. The trunk of the clock has conforming canted corners and glazed opening front door with beaded edging and bevelled glass. The clock stands on a plinth with beaded panelled effect and four large block feet. It has well chosen mahogany flame veneers and the proportions are excellent. The regulator layout dial is signed for the maker, ‘Simmons, Coleman Street, London’. It has a seconds ring with observatory markings and the hour ring below. The eight day movement is of fine quality with substantial plates with five nicely knopped pillars. The wheel work has six crossings and it has high count pinions. There is a most unusual spring system attached to the anchor which has an adjustable stop. This system counteracts some additional arc of the pendulum whilst imparting additional force on its return. The steel and brass mercury compensated pendulum is of typical form but with a round pendulum rod rather than the more normal flat. It has a regulation nut with divisions and a steel pointer. The base of the pendulum has a central pointer which runs against a beat plaque fixed to the backboard of the case. The weight is offset to the left and hangs from a well made pulley with six crossings. Height: 6' 6" (198 cm.) Sold |

There are a number of Simmons noted as working in London. In particular there is one without a Christian name noted as working in Coleman Street in the mid 19th century.
