ALEXANDER WILSON, LONDON.
A PARTICULARLY FINE CARVED GILTWOOD EIGHT DAY CARTEL WALL CLOCK. CIRCA 1780.

The attractive giltwood case is beautifully carved with bold flowing leafy scrolls. It has a floral top and the main body has incised leaf carving.

The 8˝" engraved silvered brass dial has Roman numerals and Arabic five minute numerals with the scrolling signature ‘Alexr Wilson, London’ to the centre. It has a shaped aperture for the false pendulum and a small dial sector at XII with a small blued hand for rise and fall regulation. The elegant blued steel hands are finely cut and fretted.

Access to the substantial eight day timepiece movement is gained by a large door at the rear of the case. The tall rectangular movement has a plain backplate and is secured with two vertical straps. It has verge escapement with rise and fall regulation, five pillars and a gut fusee. The pendulum has a lenticular bob with a sprung securing bracket.

Alexander Wilson was known to be working in Drury Lane, London sometime before 1772. He was admitted into the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1781 and was still with them until 1794.
