AN INTERESTING EARLY LONGCASE CLOCK WITH DUTCH INFLUENCE BY THE RENOWNED PARTNERSHIP OF FROMANTEEL & CLARKE. CIRCA 1710.

The walnut case with domed top with elaborate fretwork. The shaped door with a lenticle. The base with concave moulding to the small bun feet. The exceptional dial with well matted centre, ringed winding holes and unusual gilded cast spandrels with strike/silent lever just below the arch and a large silvered signature circle within the arch, and with silvered alarm disc in the centre.

The dial and arch edged with beautifully executed wheatear engraving. The early movement with five knopped pillars, rack striking and with the alarm work mounted on a susidiary plate. The anchor escapement with long crutch to the steel rod pendulum.

Ahasuerus Fromanteel the younger, the son of Ahasuerus the elder, was born in 1640. He was in partnership with Christopher Clarke, an ex-patriot English clockmaker in Amsterdam, who had married his daughter. The partnership was continued after 1703 by Abraham Fromanteel or both him and Ahasuerus.
