31047C.L A well figured and well proportioned mahogany longcase clock. The case with swan necked top and verre eglomisé panels has ribbed pillars to the side of the hood with Corinthian capitals in brass. There is a dentil moulding at the top of the trunk and then below the concave throat of the clock there is a blind fret reminiscent of Liverpool work. The main trunk of the clock has canted corners with brass capped Corinthian columns. It has a full length door with a shaped top and well chosen flame veneers. There is a strong moulding to the base of the clock which again has canted corners and an applied flame veneered panel with cut out corners. The clock stands on four ogee feet typical of the region. The brass moonphase dial has two attractive paintings between the moon showing semi clad female figures, one with a sickle and sheaf of corn and the other with a bunch of flowers. The globes are well detailed and the clock has gilded spandrels to the four corners. The silvered chapter ring has Roman numerals and Arabic outer numerals with dot minute divisions and is signed for the maker Brown, Chester. The centre of the dial is of plain polished brass with an engraved seconds ring and a shaped cut out for the date above 6 o’clock. The hands are of blued steel. The eight day movement has anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell mounted above the backplate. It has four nicely knopped pillars and well crossed out wheel work. Height: 7' 8" (234 cms.) |
