31181C.L A rare William & Mary month duration longcase clock. The case, which stands on bun feet, is veneered with walnut with panels of bird and floral marquetry to the base, trunk and hood. The front-opening hood door is flanked by barley twist columns. A rare feature of the clock is the original caddy top with three brass finials. The 11" square brass dial is mounted with cherub and foliage spandrels and a silvered chapter ring. The centre is finely matted with an aperture below 12 o’clock to view the date and the maker’s signature, "Isaac Lownds in ye Pall Mall," is below 6 o’clock. The blued steel hands are finely pierced and faceted. The high quality month duration movement is partially latched. The hours are sounded on a bell via an outside count wheel. This clock is in fine original condition. A number of features are similar to those employed by Joseph Knibb with whom Lownds is known to have collaborated. Height to top of finial: 7' 5" (225cms.) |

Isaac Lownds or Loundes was in Pall Mall Court in 1682 when he was free of the Clockmakers’ Company. According to Loomes, he was last heard of in 1702 when the Company refused to excuse him of Stewardship though he claimed "he is to go into the country very suddenly". Two marquetry longcase clocks by Lownds were in the Wetherfield Collection. Britten illustrates a "very fine" ebony veneered bracket clock dated at about 1700.
