THOMAS HAMMANT, LONDON. AN ATTRACTIVE EBONISED ARCH TOPPED STRIKING BRACKET CLOCK WITH ALARM AND SILENT VERGE ESCAPEMENT. 4TH JUNE, 1790.

A very elegant ebonised arch topped bracket clock, the case with relatively shallow arch surmounted by a carrying handle with brass fishscale frets to the side and brass mouldings to the door.

The attractive dial with date ring in the arch and with strike/silent lever between the date ring and the chapter ring. The well matted centre has a shaped cutout below 12 o’clock for the signature "Thomas Hammant, June 4th 1790, London". The alarm dial is as usual mounted round the hour hand arbor.

The eight day fusee movement has a verge escapement with the unusual addition of silent spring pallets. The backplate of the clock is fully engraved.

It is most unusual to have a clock which is fully dated, as in this case. It is possible that this clock was commissioned as a marriage gift.

Height to base of handle: 15.5" (39 cms.)
