PETER POHLMANN, LONDON. A FINE QUALITY LONDON MAHOGANY QUARTER STRIKING LONGCASE CLOCK. CIRCA 1780.

An extremely attractive mahogany longcase clock. The case with well chosen flame veneers to the trunk door and to the base. The trunk with reeded brass inlaid columns to the corners. The base with a shaped panel and standing on a double footed plinth. The bottom part being nicely shaped at the front.

The typical London pagoda top with reeded brass inlaid columns to the sides. The pagoda with two original ball and spire finials. The centre of the pagoda with a fretted wooden sound fret.

The extremely attractive dial with date ring in the arch. The corners of the dial and the sides of the arch have well cast gilded spandrels. The silvered chapter ring enclosing a narrow silvered seconds ring and an ornate shaped silvered signature plaque. The brass is nicely matted.

The fine quality three train quarter striking movement with six knopped pillars strikes the quarters on two bells and the hour on a further large bell mounted above the movement. The pendulum has a flat brass rod and large brass bob and all three weights are brass encased.

This is a particularly nice and very original longcase clock enhanced by the quality of the dial and case and the fact that it is quarter striking. The maker, Peter Pohlmann, is recorded as working in Drury Lane in 1762 and then he moved to Holloway Street and finally to Leadenhall Street.

Height: 96" (244 cms.)
