31401C.BR The mahogany case with a stepped and chamfered top has attractive brass bound quarter panels to the front of the case at the top and bottom of the dial with panels of mahogany inlaid with floral brass work. The sides of the clock have fishscale sound frets and intricate ringed handles. There is an ebonised dentil moulding to the top and bottom of the case, the bottom of the case having a small brass inlaid plinth and standing on round brass ball feet. The chamfered top is surmounted by a cast brass pineapple finial. The round painted dial, with its original background, is signed for the maker ‘John Charles, Portsea’ and is contained within an opening cast brass bezel. The hands of the clock are nicely shaped and pierced and are of blued steel. |

The eight day gut fusee movement has cut out footed plates with shaped tops. It strikes the hour on a bell mounted on the backplate and there is a pendulum hold fast with a nicely shaped cock.
Height to the top of the finial: 19" (48 cms.)
John Charles is recorded as working in Portsea, Hampshire from about 1800 to 1848.
