31403C.C The elegant Series 1 one piece case has lift out rear door with shutters for the winding holes and handset hole. The baseplate numbered 1686 with a further number 6, probably the retailer’s number. The original wooden baseplate with a later similar number written on the inside. The typical bell striking, repeating movement with Garnier’s chaffcutter escapement. The wheel and pinion work of the usual high quality expected of this maker. The white enamel dial signed for the retailer with a form of trefoil hands used by Garnier. The case some 5.5" tall, excluding the handle, and 4" wide. Jean Paul Garnier, 1801-1869, is now recognised as the founder of the Paris carriage clock industry which developed in the 19th century. He is particularly noted for his invention of the chaffcutter escapement which was simple, reliable and easy to be created in a production line. |

There were four basic case styles, Series 1, 2, 3 and 4. Although the latter three overlap, Series 1 cases appear not to have overlapped with the later case styles.
There is a great deal of information in both the Allix & Bonnert ‘Carriage Clocks’ book and, in particular, Derek Roberts’ ‘Carriage & Other Travelling Clocks’ chapter 3.
