MANOAH RHODES & CO, BRADFORD. AN UNUSUAL GILDED AND SILVERED ENGRAVED MANTEL CLOCK IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS COLE. CIRCA 1860.

A most unusual and attractive gilded and engraved mantel clock. The case with flowing buttress sides and a semi architectural top reminiscent of an oriental palace. It has dentil style detail above and below the dial. The base and the sides have panels edged with cast bead work and engraving in the middle of the panels. There is engraving to the top of the case and to the sides of the front. The rear door lifts out and again has an engraved design in its middle.

The heavily engraved and silvered dial has serpentine engraving inside and outside the round chapter ring. The ring is signed for the maker Manoah Rhodes & Co, Bradford. It has Roman numerals and nicely shaped poker and beetle hands of blued steel.

The eight day gong striking movement is of unusual construction with a shaped and cut away backplate making the large platform lever escapement visible above the plate. It winds from the back and the blued steel gong is mounted on the backplate and extends through a slot in the case work. There is also a hand setting square on the backplate.

The wheel work is of fine quality.

Height: 9.5" (24 cms.)

Price band: B
