JOHN GREEN, LONDON. AN ATTRACTIVE MAHOGANY BELL TOP STRIKING CLOCK. CIRCA 1800.

An attractive mahogany bell top striking bracket clock. The case of typical form is quite restrained and has wooden mouldings to the bell top and to the front door. There are two nicely cast and gilded sound frets to the top of the front door and the clock stands on ogee bracket feet. The rear door again has a moulding round its edge. All the mouldings are well defined and executed. The quality of the case, although restrained, is excellent.

The brass dial has a strike/silent dial in the arch with a well matted centre. The main dial, with Roman numerals and Arabic outer numerals, has a cut out for the mock pendulum bob within the well matted centre. There is a date aperture above 6 o’clock and above that a shaped cartouche for the signature ‘Jn. Green, London.’

The eight day bell striking movement has a very nicely engraved backplate. It has five knopped pillars, verge escapement and twin gut fusees. It strikes the hours on a bell mounted above the backplate and has a trip repeat. The seatboard has an old Camerer Cuss repair label.

Height to base of handle: 19.5" (50 cms.)

Price band: C

There is a John Green noted as working from St. Martin’s Court from 1780 and another noted as working in Goswell Street in 1799. It is highly likely that one of these two makers was the maker of this clock.
