PAUL GARNIER/GUYERDET AINE’ PARIS NO. 105. AN EARLY EXAMPLE OF THE WORK OF PAUL GARNIER IN A GILDED ROCOCO CASE. CIRCA 1832.

This clock is a fine example of one of Garnier’s Pendule Portatives produced in the early years of his manufacture before he concentrated on carriage clocks. A particularly attractive feature is that the movement is enclosed in a glass cylinder so that Mr. Garnier’s new escapement was given maximum exposure.

The front and back of the clock are decorated with flowers and sea-shells and linked at the top by two pillars which support the carrying handle. At the bottom of the clock on either side are two attractively shaped and decorated pillars and the clock rests on a plain gilded plinth.

The front winding movement, typical of Garnier, features his chaffcutter (frictional rest) escapement having a plain balance with the regulator mounted above it and the usual two escape wheels. A silvered brass dial some 3" in diameter is employed with Roman numerals and blued steel hands. It is surrounded by a front opening gilded bezel.

The clock, which strikes the hours and halves on a bell, is signed on the backplate P.G. Brevete, together with the serial number 105. It also bears the name of the retailer Guyerdet Aine’ Paris.

Height with/without handle: 8" / 7.2" (20.3 /18.3 cms.)

Price band: B
