31522C.W The substantial case is beautifully turned and made up of multi sections of solid mahogany. This form of construction is less likely to change shape due to shrinkage, a fact that is often associated with large round clocks. The top three sections slide out to allow minor access to the top of the movement. It has two stout iron hanging brackets to secure it to the wall and a heavy cast brass bezel with slightly convex glass. Hidden behind the bezel is a small cutout in the case just below the dial for starting the clock. The pendulum can be swung using the unusually long bezel locking pin. The 17" silvered and engraved dial has black Roman numerals and is signed Vulliamy, London. It has blued steel heart shaped spade and pointer hands and just below the Vulliamy signature is a small square for adjusting the rise and fall regulation. |

The substantial eight day timepiece chain fusee movement has a recoil anchor escapement and fine wheel work. The rise and fall mechanism is mounted between the top of the plates and the large suspension block pivots in the centre. This locates on a cam secured to the front plate. Unusually, the elegantly shaped back cock is a two piece item and grips the suspension spring. The polished backplate is engraved ‘Vulliamy, London 1112’ and interestingly scratched on the front plate is ‘Jockey Club’ and a repair date of 1845. It is secured in the case with two shaped brackets and knurled brass headed screws on a fixed seatboard. The pendulum has the typical heavy weight two piece brass bob which is screwed and riveted together and engraved with the number 1112. It has an ebony diamond shaped rod with triple screwed suspension. Diameter: 22.5" (43 cms.) |

This clock was advertised by Alexander Podd & Son Ltd of Dunstable, B.A.D.A. members, in the February 1967 edition of ‘The Antique Dealer & Collectors Guide.’ It states that the clock was presented to the Jockey Club at Newmarket by William IV, then Duke of Clarence. We have been unable to verify this as 1112 falls outside the surviving Vulliamy records and most of King William IV’s records were destroyed after his death by his Executor.
This imposing clock of the highest quality was obviously designed for an important function room.
