No.131. SEVEN CLOCKS BY VULLIAMY. The name of Vulliamy is one of the most eminent in the world of horology and the following six clocks aptly demonstrate this. Justin Vulliamy (1712 - 1797) was born in Geneva and spent his early years in Paris. He joined Benjamin Gray in London, who held the Royal Appointment, and succeeded him when he died in 1764. Justin took his son, Benjamin (1747 – 1811), into the business and he was probably the most widely talented artistic member of the family. Benjamin was granted Royal Appointment as the King’s Clockmaker in 1773. Benjamin’s son, Benjamin Lewis (1780 – 1854), was the last of the clockmakers and was five times elected Master of the Clockmakers’ Company. Further reading: ‘The Vulliamy Clockmakers’ by David G. Vulliamy and the various detailed articles by Roger Smith. |
