The Lotus Elan Sprint was the last incarnation of the Elan which had originated in the early 1960s. The Sprint followed on from the S4 Elan in order to bolster flagging sales. It used a big valve version of the Lotus twin cam engine which boosted the power output and performance from the standard S4. All the Elan range from the early cars had superlative road holding and handling, and are a delight to drive to this day.

This particular Elan Sprint left the factory in November 1972 and was sent to Bell & Colvill. It has its original engine and body, and is still in the colours in which it left the factory of Lotus yellow and cirrus white. It was, and is, fitted with the 3.55:1 differential. The Lotus Vehicle Provenance Certificate notes that it was the 95th from last UK Sprint drophead coupe and the 17th from last in Lotus yellow.

The car, unusually, has a Lenham hardtop and has had a new Lotus chassis fitted. The engine was rebuilt some years ago. There is a large history file with the car detailing most of the work since it was new and MOTs going back to 1983. There are also in the file the original owner’s handbook and the original service voucher book with the first three years of service history. There are also copious notes from two of its owners detailing all the work done between 1983 and 1998. The car has recently had a complete respray in its original colours to get rid of some crazing, together with refurbishment of the dashboard and switches. The car runs and drives superbly with good oil pressure and the performance is as it should be.

An excellent original Elan Sprint DHC with wonderful history and looking superb.
