An attractive mantel timepiece of small size. The case of rosewood with brass inlay has a domed top, canted brass inlaid corners and stands on small gilded brass acorn feet. There is brass inlay to the front of the domed top and the top corners of the opening door, and the front of the plinth.

The silvered and engraved dial is particularly nice with leaf and flower scrolling nicely engraved below the dial. The dial is signed for the maker Haley, London and has Roman numerals and finely pierced heart and pointer steel hands.

The eight day gut fusee movement of fine quality is signed on the backplate Haley, London and has the nice feature of a pendulum bob adjustable from the top.  Like many of the good makers of the period, Haley would have used outworkers.  The front plate of the movement is stamped for the movement maker Holmden, London, 466.

The maker is noted as working in London in the 1880s, but little else is known about him. This clock would have been made earlier in his career.

Holmden was one of the finest movement makers of the period, and we know from the Vulliamy Day Books that he made many of the movements for B L Vulliamy.
